The six-patch proposal would select thermal trip points from manufacturing fuse data. Affected elevated-bin parts would use a 105°C passive threshold, while standard-bin parts retain 95°C.
Qualcomm engineer Gaurav Kohli submitted a six-patch Linux thermal series on October 2, 2026, proposing hardware-selected temperature thresholds, with Snapdragon X laptops among its intended beneficiaries. This is a submission, not a kernel release: Phoronix reported the patches were under review in coverage retrieved October 5. 3 1 2
The problem is that the same silicon can ship in different thermal or package bins, meaning categories with different valid junction-temperature limits. Manufacturing fuses identify the category. Board-specific trip overrides can accommodate individual cases, but they attach the temperature choice to board identity rather than the hardware property that actually determines the limit. 2
The proposal moves that choice into thermal-zone registration. The sensor driver supplies a decoded bin to the thermal OF parser, which reads the device-tree thermal description. The thermal-hw-bin property specifies which bin-mask groups a trip applies to; temperature-bin supplies the matching temperatures. Thus one generic description can select different trip points, or temperature thresholds, according to the part's bin rather than requiring a separate board override. 2
Qualcomm's TSENS thermal driver is the first implementation. For SC7280/QCM6490-class platforms it decodes the jtag-id and feat-id QFPROM cells; for X1E80100-class platforms it reads the i-temp bit. That decoding happens before trip parsing, so the generic parser receives the selected bin without needing to interpret Qualcomm-specific fuse fields itself. 2
For the affected Kodiak and Hamoa thermal zones, standard-bin parts keep a 95°C passive trip, while elevated-bin parts select 105°C. The operational distinction is therefore bin-dependent thermal policy, not a blanket temperature increase for Snapdragon laptops. Engineers assessing the change should check whether their platform uses those thermal-zone descriptions and which bin its fuse data selects, rather than treating the product family as sufficient evidence. 2
As of the October 5 source retrieval, review status supports tracking the series, not assuming it is available in a released distribution kernel. The supplied coverage establishes no merged release or distribution delivery date. It also provides no measurements establishing how the proposed thresholds affect sustained performance, power consumption or cooling on retail laptops. 1
