Oxide Computer Company has rolled out a series of integrations that allow Kubernetes to run seamlessly on its platform, driven by direct customer feedback. This initiative, led by Matthew Sanabria, Oxide's first Solutions Software Engineer, addresses a pressing demand from late 2024 when customers were eager to deploy Kubernetes on Oxide without any supported integrations.
The integration effort began with customer-submitted resources, namely a Rancher node driver pull request and an early draft of RFD 493. Rather than designing integrations in a vacuum, the team focused on solving real-world customer issues, moving from provisioning clusters to operating workloads. This approach ensured that the solutions were practical and aligned with customer workflows.
Provisioning was the initial hurdle tackled by the team. A Rancher node driver, which is a plugin that enables Rancher to manage virtual machines on specific infrastructure, was central to this effort. The Oxide Rancher node driver translates Rancher's operations into Oxide API requests, allowing for smooth integration. The team's experience with this customer-submitted pull request not only unblocked the initial customer but also laid the groundwork for broader deployment strategies.
The integration efforts didn't stop at provisioning. They expanded to cover various aspects of Kubernetes lifecycle management, from infrastructure reconciliation to networking and storage constraints. Customers' workflows exposed gaps that guided the development of these integrations, ensuring they were practical and effective.
This customer-centric approach has not only made Kubernetes deployment on Oxide more accessible but has also highlighted the importance of listening to real-world needs in software development.
