The testing prepatch adds a warning for ext4 journal data mode without removing it. Operators relying on the mode have a migration deadline, but the patch supplies no replacement procedure.
Linux 7.3-rc7 is available for testing, according to LWN's report retrieved October 13, 2026. It is a prepatch, not the final 7.3 release, and includes the deprecation of ext4's data=journal mount mode. LWN quotes Linus Torvalds as still planning the final release for the following weekend unless new problems emerge. The supplied report does not establish rc7's publication date, so the retrieval date should not be read as its release date. 1
With data=journal, all file data are committed to the journal before being written to the main filesystem. The deprecation patch leaves that sequence intact. Its code change checks whether the filesystem's data-mode flags select EXT4_MOUNT_JOURNAL_DATA and emits a kernel warning announcing removal in January 2028. This is notice of a future compatibility change, not code rejecting the option. 2 3
The new warning targets journal data mode, not every ext4 filesystem: other data-mode selections do not satisfy its condition. It also sits beside an existing warning that data=journal disables delayed allocation, dioread_nolock, O_DIRECT and fast_commit support. Those restrictions are therefore not new rc7 regressions. For engineers testing this configuration, the added diagnostic identifies a dependency that will need attention before support disappears. 3
The operational inference is to inventory ext4 configurations relying on data=journal and plan their migration before the stated deadline, rather than treat the warning as a filesystem repair request. The patch changes documentation and adds one source line; it supplies no migration procedure or replacement-mode recommendation. It also does not establish how the option will be handled after removal, so it cannot justify assuming a particular fallback behavior. 3 2
