AMD Updates HDMI FRL for Linux 7.4, Enhances Support for Future GPUs

By Zayden R., September 18, 2026

AMD has released new HDMI FRL updates for the upcoming Linux 7.4 kernel, enhancing audio support and preparing for future hardware. Engineers should expect better performance with AMDGPU drivers and HDMI 2.1 enabled by default.

AMD has rolled out another set of updates for its AMDGPU kernel graphics driver, targeting the forthcoming Linux 7.4 release. The latest batch, submitted by AMDGPU maintainer Alex Deucher, focuses on HDMI Fixed Rate Link (FRL) improvements, including audio support enhancements and increased code test coverage. These updates are crucial as they pave the way for seamless HDMI 2.1 support, which will be enabled by default in Linux 7.4.

The significance of HDMI 2.1 support cannot be overstated. This update promises higher resolutions and refresh rates, directly benefiting users who rely on AMD's open-source driver implementation. The journey to this point has been long, with initial rejections from the HDMI Forum. However, recent collaboration, possibly involving Valve, has accelerated progress. As a result, Linux 7.4 will integrate most of the HDMI 2.1 work, marking a significant step forward for AMDGPU.

Beyond HDMI improvements, the updates address a range of fixes and enhancements for upcoming AMD hardware. These include adjustments for the GFX12.1 graphics block, Display Core Next 6 (DCN6) engine, and Compute Unit (CU) occupancy reporting for RDNA1/GFX10 hardware. Engineers should also note the various fixes for the AMDKFD compute driver, such as boundary checks and mapping clear fixes.

The list of changes is extensive, covering runtime power management, PCIe reporting, and DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (DP MST) fixes, among others. This comprehensive update aims to refine the AMDGPU driver, ensuring stability and performance across different configurations. With the Linux 7.4 merge window closing soon, stakeholders should prepare to integrate these updates into their systems to leverage the full potential of AMD's latest advancements.
