AMD P-State pull request targets Zen 6 client support for Linux 7.4

By The Linux Camp News, October 5, 2026

The proposed update adds Zen 6 frequency-capacity handling and energy-performance tuning, alongside driver-mode fixes. It is a staging submission, not confirmation of complete platform support.

Mario Limonciello submitted an AMD P-State pull request targeting Linux 7.4 on October 4, 2026. Its Zen 6 client work covers initial maximum-frequency capacity handling and updated energy-performance tuning. This is proposed driver support, not a released kernel or confirmation that every part of a Zen 6 platform is supported. 2 1

The frequency work crosses more than the AMD P-State driver: the listed patches refactor ACPI CPPC boost-ratio handling, make acpi-cpufreq use amd_get_boost_ratio(), and add highest-frequency retrieval for a CPU in amd-pstate. These identify the implementation areas, but the submission does not show the calculation or explain what earlier kernels would get wrong on Zen 6. It therefore cannot establish a specific frequency-reporting or performance improvement. 2

The second hardware-specific change updates Energy Performance Preference, or EPP, tuning. Phoronix reports that this spans performance cores, power/dense cores and a new low-power core type in Zen 6 client designs. That makes the update relevant to engineers evaluating those mixed-core clients, but the supplied coverage gives neither numerical settings nor measured power or performance results. 1

There are also changes for workflows that switch driver modes. One patch restores the previous mode when a change fails; another propagates cppc_set_auto_sel() errors during mode changes. The intended effect is recovery rather than leaving a failed transition unhandled: restore the prior mode and report the underlying error. The summary does not provide a reproduction case or identify all affected configurations. 2

For deployment planning, track acceptance before treating Linux 7.4 as a validated baseline. In the sources retrieved October 5, 2026, Phoronix describes submission for power-management staging ahead of the merge window, not mainline acceptance. The pull request also fixes Zen 6 maximum-frequency and EPP unit-test failures; test maintenance is not a published hardware-validation result. A released containing version and distribution backports remain unestablished by this packet. 1 2
