The release removes graphical agent-selection workflows and reportedly adjusts model context to available RAM, targeting first-launch failures on 16 GB Linux laptops.
AMD's GAIA v0.25.0, listed by GitHub as released October 18 and marked Latest in the October 20, 2026 capture, changes chat and speech workflows for the open-source AI-agent project targeting Ryzen AI hardware. For Linux users, the release also brings a reported fix for first-launch memory failures on 16 GB laptops. 3 1 2
The terminal's gaia chat replaces ChatAgent with the GAIA agent already used by the terminal interface and Agent UI. This is not merely a default change: the graphical interface loses its agent picker, Agent Hub home and custom-agent import/export. Workflows depending on those controls therefore need review before migration. 2
Phoronix reports that GAIA checks free RAM before loading a model and shrinks its context window, the amount of text the model can consider, to fit. The motivating failure involved Linux's kernel killing the application on its first launch on 16 GB laptops. The inferred trade-off is less context for lower memory demand, not proof that every model fits. The supplied report gives no thresholds or cross-system validation. 1
Speech now depends on Lemonade: gaia talk uses Whisper and kokoro-v1 through that server for transcription and speech generation. Check Lemonade availability when assessing voice workflows, because the command stops with an explanation if the server is down. The former [audio] installation extra is removed. 2
AMD also reports removing PyTorch, transformers and accelerate, shrinking the desktop application's Python environment from approximately 0.9 GB to 0.1 GB on Windows. Those figures describe neither the complete installation nor a measured Linux footprint; they should not be used as Linux capacity estimates. 2
Allow for one-time migration work: saved memories using the retired nomic embedder are re-embedded on first start, while the first document query rebuilds the document cache. The release notes do not quantify that work's duration, so first-use timing should not be treated as steady-state performance. 2
For local-only deployments, check the session's model rather than assuming GAIA means local execution. The Agent UI now names the actual model in its header and stops claiming “100% local” when chat uses a cloud model. 2
