Commission and hand off a Linux host

Coming soon. This course is planned; lessons and labs are not available yet. No release date has been announced.

Verify a host's identity, provisioning state, management path and workload path, then hand it over with actionable evidence.

Intermediate ยท Host commissioning and handoff

Before you begin

Operate a Linux server and know basic networking. Prior BMC study helps with out-of-band management evidence.

The planned project

The planned project asks you to commission an owned host, distinguish management from workload health and provide an acceptance record another operator can use.

Course scope

One host and its management evidence; physical facility design and safety work require specialist practice.

Planned course outline

3 planned chapters and 6 lesson outlines.

  1. Establish the host identity

Connect the inventory record to the machine that actually boots.

    1. Planned lesson: Reconcile inventory and device evidence

Planned task: Compare host identity, firmware, interfaces and storage with an approved inventory record.

Changed case to investigate: A replacement interface changes the observed identifier; verify identity without trusting one label.

    2. Planned lesson: Provision from stated intent

Planned task: Check boot image, network, accounts and service baseline against the commissioning plan.

Changed case to investigate: One firmware or network value drifts; decide whether to hold acceptance.

  2. Separate control and workload

A reachable management controller does not prove the operating system or application is healthy.

    1. Planned lesson: Verify management access

Planned task: Use BMC or labeled Redfish evidence to inspect power and console paths without changing the workload.

Changed case to investigate: The BMC answers but the OS does not; choose the next bounded observation.

    2. Planned lesson: Prove the workload path

Planned task: Check the Linux service and representative client request independently of management status.

Changed case to investigate: The OS is reachable but a storage dependency fails; report the distinct boundary.

  3. Accept and hand off

Document the evidence, limits and recovery path needed for another operator.

    1. Planned lesson: Run an acceptance check

Planned task: Verify identity, access, service behavior and outstanding exceptions against explicit criteria.

Changed case to investigate: A sensor reading is unavailable; record the evidence gap rather than inventing hardware health.

    2. Planned lesson: Deliver a recoverable runbook

Planned task: Write checks, escalation and rollback steps, then have another operator follow the record.

Changed case to investigate: The original operator is absent during a failure; identify and correct a missing handoff step.
